Pasadena Education Stalwart Patrick Cahalan Steps Back, No 2024 Reelection
Longtime member of the Pasadena Unified School District Board of Education, Patrick Cahalan, recently announced his decision to step back from seeking reelection in 2024, concluding over eight and a half years of dedicated service.
In a heartfelt statement, Cahalan emphasized the importance of active parental involvement on the PUSD Board of Education, revealing that with his youngest child set to graduate from PUSD at the academic year’s end, the timing was right for a change.
Cahalan, who began his service on May 4, 2015, spanning slightly more than two regular four-year terms, has been a staunch advocate for public education throughout his tenure. Expressing gratitude in his announcement, he acknowledged the collaborative efforts of fellow Board Members, educators, principals, and key figures such as Patrick Conyers and Nancy Dufford.
Reflecting on his appreciation for those supporting public education, Cahalan extended heartfelt thanks to everyone involved, from past and present Board Members to administrative staff, labor partners, and the dedicated teachers and principals who played a vital role in shaping his own children’s educational journey.
Acknowledging the contributions of the wider community, Cahalan specifically thanked those involved in the PTA at various levels, emphasizing the crucial role they play in supporting education. He reserved a special acknowledgment for his family, expressing deep gratitude to his wife and two children, highlighting his wife Kitty’s significant advocacy work for PUSD.
Cahalan, a Pasadena resident since 2001, brings a wealth of experience in education and technology. Serving as the Director of Curriculum and Technology at Loyola High School in the 1990s, he has been with Caltech since 2002, currently holding the position of Manager of Technical Operations for the Computational and Mathematical Sciences Department.
His commitment to education and community involvement extends beyond the school board, including roles in the Longfellow Elementary School Site Council, where he served as Chair, and as a member of the District Advisory Council, contributing from 2012 to 2015.
In addition to his educational endeavors, Cahalan has actively participated in the local community, serving on the Bungalow Heaven Neighborhood Association Board and chairing the Emergency Preparedness Committee.
As Cahalan bids adieu to his role on the PUSD Board of Education, his legacy of advocacy and community service will undoubtedly leave a lasting impact on the Pasadena education landscape.
